Group Environmental Manager

Company Background:

The Group is currently divided into three clusters, namely, Construction and Engineering, Opencast Mining and Manufacturing and Processing


Position / Job Summary:

Reporting to the Group Risk Manager, the Environmental Manager, will have responsibility and authority for developing and implementing the Group’s environmental management strategies and policies aligned to best practices and taking into account legislative requirements.


Key areas of activity:

  • Undertake an industry analysis and determine best practices and procedures in the environmental sphere pertaining to the Group's operations

  • Review legislation and industry specifications and determine best practices pertaining to the Group’s sphere of operations

  • Review requirements of the Socially Responsible Investment (SRI) Index, Experts in Responsible Investment Solutions (EIRIS) and Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) and update the current requirements questionnaire

  • Liaise with operating groups and business units to determine the current status pertaining to EIRIS, SRI and CDP and determine the Group's carbon emissions footprint

  • Evaluate a strategic policy for the Group's environmental programme

  • Develop the Group Environmental Framework

  • Develop a Responsibility Framework for the Group’s Environmental Framework

  • Review and develop the Group's environmental targets in conjunction with all the role players

  • Review and develop the implementation of the Group environmental strategy

  • Develop a roll-out plan and training module/s to ensure that all relevant parties have a full understanding of the Group's environmental plan requirements

  • Develop a systematic roll-out plan for the implementation of the key elements of the Group's Environmental Management Framework

  • Develop and implement a reporting and feedback framework

Key Attributes Required:

  • Bachelor of Science (Environmental Management) degree or equivalent

  • At least 5 years' experience in environmental management at middle management level

  • Experience in measuring and reporting on an organisation’s carbon emissions is essential

  • A team player with excellent interpersonal and communications skills who is able to get co‑operation from others

  • A strong persuasive character who is able to gain the respect of senior executives

  • Able to work independently

  • A flair for negotiating
