POSITION: Head of Risk

NATURE OF BUSINESS: a leading listed financial services company

JOB LOCATION: Johannesburg

REPORTS TO: Chief Risk Officer



The Head of Risk forms a key component of the company’s second line of defence with regard to Risk Management and encompasses managing the Risk Management team for the entire group. The successful candidate will be responsible for leadership and day to day management of the risk function and is required to devise, modify, implement and monitor an appropriate risk management strategy across the organisation’s entire risk universe to assist in safeguarding against any potential threats to the achievement of its business objectives.



  • Qualified Actuary/Chartered Accountant/Internal Auditor/Advanced designation or degree
  • Preferably a post graduate risk qualification, preferably in Risk Management
  • At least ten years’ experience in an Enterprise Risk Management environment gained within the South African financial services sector, preferably across multiple complex business
  • Thorough grasp of ERM principles and techniques and understanding of strategy, governance and performance dynamics. Previous experience in developing and improving ERM at a senior level
  • Relevant legislative knowledge i.e. Solvency Assessment and Management (SAM), King IV, TCF, PoPI etc
  • Experienced in developing innovative solutions; identifying new areas of opportunity; and identifying, analysing and addressing the appropriate risks in order to move the business forward
  • Experience of leading teams of professional staff in a complex environment, as well as guiding and developing the team, preparing succession options within the team, monitoring progress against plans and managing performance



  • Actively develop short and long term strategies. Demonstrate commercial and financial expertise.
  • Use a methodical problem solving approach as a foundation for effective decision making taking into account importance, urgency and risk.
  • Translate business objectives into practical, prioritised and organised action plans; ensure plans are successfully implemented
  • Generate and implement new and innovative ideas/approaches to improve business outcomes
