POSITION Commercial Director/ Chief Executive Officer Designate

NATURE OF BUSINESS: Leading Retail and Wholesale Organisation

JOB LOCATION: Johannesburg

REPORTS TO: Chairman


SUMMARY OF EXECUTIVE OPPORTUNITY: Initially have responsibility for the commercial function. At a later stage, assume responsibility and authority for the effective leadership and profitable management of the division with particular emphasis on: creating, developing and implementing a vision, strategic direction and momentum to build on the potential and profitability that has been created; improving operational efficiencies; growing the Unit organically and by synergistic acquisitions; and creating an ethos of excellence and desire for continuous improvement and growth in the company



  • At least ten years’ working experience
  • Ideally a Chartered Accountant
  • Experience in acquisitions is essential
  • Experience in Africa would be an added advantage
  • Should have had experience in a general management position with P&L responsibility for a retail company or a supplier to the retail sector
  • Should have managed a staff complement of at least 300 people and 10 retail outlets and have had responsibility for an annual turnover of at least R1 billion
  • Should have had some experience in the clothing and footwear sector
  • Strong financial acumen and sales and marketing skills
  • A stable career history with a demonstrable track record of success



  • Establish credibility as Commercial Director and subsequently Chief Executive Officer (Designate) , without alienation of existing staff and rapidly assume managerial responsibility and authority so as to build upon the existing momentum
  • Determine, in conjunction with the Chairman and other Directors, the strategic vision, objectives and operating criteria for the company for the immediate, medium and long term
  • Oversee the marketing strategy and actively promote the company and its strong brands in the marketplace
  • Control, regularly evaluate and report on the performance of the Unit against established objectives, plans and budgets
  • Establish personal credibility and sound working relationships with the groups Brand Principals and Key Customers, ensuring the protection of key accounts and the development of new business
