Country Manager, Uganda



Company Background: a South Africa-based telecommunications operator providing affordable communications using IP-based, wireless technologies (WiMAX) and an innovative business model. The Company’s aim is to provide people at the bottom of the pyramid easily accessible and affordable communication services, enabling previously marginalised consumers to participate in the economic growth of their communities.


Position Summary: Give direction and leadership towards the achievement of the company’s philosophy, mission, strategy and its goals and objectives in line with the Group’s strategy while serving as a senior representative in Uganda.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Give direction and leadership towards the achievement of the company’s philosophy, mission, strategy and its goals and objectives in  line with the Group’s strategy
  • Set and Manage growth and quality targets
  • Manage  the Company in a cost efficient and effective manner regarding all resources
  • Review performance reports and financial statements to determine progress and status in attaining objectives and review objectives and plans  according with current conditions and approved budget
  • Build and manage relationships with public, government (regulatory bodies) and private business/industry leaders and organizations, 3rd party agreements and preferred partners
  • Represent the Company at Legislative sessions, committee meetings and a formal functions
  • Support the delivery of the Group Financial target (Revenue, EBITDA and cash flow)
  • Ensure that the Group’s value proposition is delivered consistently throughout the company
  • Give direction and leadership to the functional heads and manage their performance
  • Build capacity within and the management of the Company’s management team
  • Report to the Shareholders and Board on organisational plans and performance when required
  • Provide any other ad hoc duties assigned from time to time by the Chief Operations Officer or any other person appointed by the Company for this purpose

Key Attributes:

  • Ideally a Graduate
  • Previous developing economy, country leadership experience ideally gained within a high growth / new company environment
  • Prior experience of serving the Mass Market or Bottom of the Pyramid segment preferably gained in either an FMCG or comparable telecommunications environment, with an emphasis on Sales and Distribution
  • Proven ability to mentor and lead teams
  • An understanding of markets and clients encompassing the entire value chain down to end user level
  • Experience in defining direction and taking decisions in complex settings, considering the different interests of different parties
