Managing Director, Construction


Reports to: Group Chief Executive Officer

Total Staff Responsibility: Around 320 permanent employees. Can fluctuate up to 700

Company Background: The Group is highly regarded in the construction, environmental solutions and risk management sectors and has a portfolio of operations in South Africa and on the African continent which allows them to service their ever expanding customer base in the mining, minerals processing, power generation, petrochemicals and water sectors. They have also delivered solutions to customers in South America, Australia, Europe and North America and are investigating opportunities in Eastern Europe and Asia.

Position Summary: Assume overall responsibility and authority for leading, managing and growing the Construction Division of the Group so as to meet targets and maximise shareholder value for the Division and the overall Group

 Key Responsibilities:  

  • Identify business value drivers and differentiators, define competitive strategy and formulate business plans and implementation tactics  
  • Identify new opportunities in new and existing markets and grow total turnover of the Division 
  • Define operational resources required to deliver service, develop and implement operational plans and tactics, identify bottlenecks and implement trouble shooting exercises when necessary 
  • Understand, manage and mitigate risks associated with operational work as well as the technical dimensions of the work environment 
  • Ensure that pre-determined Returns on Invested Capital are achieved, that capital is employed optimally and that plant and operational losses are minimized 
  • Provide visible, responsible and responsive leadership to the Division

 Key Attributes:

  • Must be a BSc graduate, preferably Civil Engineering discipline. A post-graduate degree and registration as a Professional Engineer would be highly advantageous 
  • At least ten years experience gained in a tough contracting environment at a senior level. Preferable to have had customers in the mining industry and essential to have experience of mobile plant 
  • Must have had experience in leading a high calibre team, sound knowledge of budgeting, strategic planning, risks and systems
