Human Resources Manager


On site in Limpopo

Company Background:

Our client's mine and extensive on-site smelter and other processing facilities are situated in the Bushveld Igneous Complex about 100km from Polokwane. The mine is staffed with about 3000 permanent employees and contractors. The Executive Management team is based on site.


Position Summary:

Responsibility and accountability for the Business' human resources activities with particular emphasis on:

  • Compiling and executing a human resources strategic plan to effect a turnaround in the function and thereafter ensure continual improvement in all human resource related matters to support  business strategy
  • Managing the Human Resources Department to achieve its key operational and strategic objectives
  • Defining, implementing and developing effective policies and procedures

Key areas of activity:

  • Establish responsibility and accountability for the delivery of a world class group human resources function with particular emphasis on designing, implementing and developing effective systems and procedures for each area of the Human Resources function 
  • Identification and implementation of all aspects of regulatory compliance applicable to the operations 
  • Provide high level operational Human Resources support to line management  and contribute to the current performance and future development of the business by active participation on the Executive Committee  
  • Manage employee/industrial relations, training and employment equity issues and leverage best practice Human Resources initiatives across the business  
  • Be an effective coach and sounding board for senior colleagues and be a leader and mentor of the Human Resources team 

Key Attributes Required:

  • A graduate with an appropriate post-graduate qualification. An Executive Development Programme or an MBA degree would be an added advantage

  • At least ten years experience in the human resources field in mining or industrial manufacturing environments employing at least 500 people  

  • Must currently be leading a significant human resources division (total staff responsibility is for 100 people in the Human Resources function)
  • Track record of designing and implementing strategy and turning around a human resources department  
  • Experience of working closely with a senior team and knowledgeable about performance management and reward systems  
  • Should have a good working knowledge of the various Acts controlling the working conditions of employees and be knowledgeable about mediation, arbitration, interdicts, and all relevant legislation
