POSITION: General Manager, Operations

NATURE OF BUSINESS: Engineering Solutions Company

JOB LOCATION: Johannesburg

REPORTS TO: Managing Director

TOTAL STAFF RESPONSIBILITY: Between 120 and 150 people

SUMMARY OF EXECUTIVE OPPORTUNITY: In conjunction with the other Executive Committee members, determine the long-term strategic objectives of the business and ensure business growth by directing and managing business operations activities, ensuring these are delivered in accordance with the organisational strategy


  • Must have an engineering qualification, ideally mechanical or chemical
  • At least twenty years post-qualifying experience
  • Extensive experience in managing large multi disciplinary engineering projects for the mineral processing environment is essential
  • Should currently be responsible for the execution of multiple projects with a total project value between R1 billion and R2 billion
  • Should have managed a multidisciplinary team comprising Contracts Projects Managers, a Business Risk Manager, a Quality Assurance Manager and a Health, Safety and Environment Manager with a staff complement of at least fifty people
  • Should demonstrate excellence and expertise in the fields of administration, operations, and corporate affairs
  • Effective commercial experience in running a business or business unit



  • Support the overall process of management and corporate decision-making to ensure the organisation maximises its short, medium and long-term profitability and returns to its shareholders
  • Develop, review, and report on the operations division’s strategy, ensuring the strategic objectives are well understood and executed by the heads of department
  • Manage the overall Operations Function including Contracts, Health and Safety and Quality
  • Ensure that the operations functions of the company are run effectively and efficiently so that each operational sub-division performs in terms of their strategic plan, developmental plan and operational plan objectives
  • Implement, maintain and manage an effective system of controls throughout the company’s operations
  • Build and lead an effective and cohesive management team in the operations area of the business
  • Manage the performance of all heads of department within the division through the formal performance management system
