Tip Toe Landing

Mid-morning in the South Luangwa National Park, Zambia, this male Saddlebilled Stork swooped down into a running landing on an open grassy area and appeared to tip toe as it gradually came to a resting position.

Saddlebilled Stork – Ephippiorhynchus senegalensis

Unlikely to be confused with any other stork species because of its large size and its unusual red and black banded bill, and the yellow ‘saddle’ at the bill base. Male has brown eyes and a small yellow wattle. Female has yellow eyes and lacks wattle. Habitat. Fresh water, dams, pans, rivers and floodplains. Uncommon resident; usually solitary or in pairs. Calls. Normally silent except for bill clapping during display.
